WIFV DC & National Film Registry at the Library of Congress

Every year, Women in Film & Video of Washington DC nominates culturally, historically, and aesthetically relevant films made by women for consideration by the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.  The nominations are based on research and collaboration with film historians. This year’s selection of a recently preserved film from the NYWIFT Film Preservation Fund is “New Sensations in Sound”.

We would appreciate your support and promotion of this year’s nominations:

“The Big House”, written by Frances Marion
“New Sensations in Sound”, animated and produced by Mary Ellen Bute
“Five String Banjo”, filmed by Toshi Seeger and co-directed with Pete Seeger
“Growing up Female”, directed by Julia Reichert and Jim Klein
“A League of Their Own”, directed by Penny Marshall

Please spread the word to your members and encourage them to support these
nominations electronically or to sign postcards.  They don’t have to choose
one film over another – we want the Registry to consider all five films.

Support the nominations electronically at:

A template for a postcard is attached.  It’s easy to duplicate, ask members to sign during meetings and events, and then mail the post cards in one envelope to Steve Leggett at the Registry. Let’s work together to make an impact by November 18th in celebration of Frances Marion’s birthday!

If you have any questions, please feel free to call Melissa Houghton at
